2010 JUL 3 - (<http://www.newsrx.com> NewsRx.com) -- Scientists discuss in 'In vitro proliferation and chondrogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow stem cells cultured with gelatin hydrogel microspheres for TGF-beta1 release' new findings in stem cell research (see also <http://www.newsrx.com/library/topics/Stem-Cell-Research.html> Stem Cell Research). According to a study from Kyoto, Japan, "The objective of this study was to evaluate the proliferation and chondrogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) cultured with gelatin hydrogel microspheres of cell scaffold which can release transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1). Gelatin was dehydrothermally cross-linked in different conditions in a water-in-oil Tiffany Charm bracelet state to obtain gelatin hydrogel microspheres with different water content."

"The microspheres functioned not only as the scaffold of MSC, but also the carrier matrix of TGF-beta1 release. The MSC proliferation depended on the water content of microspheres. Higher MSC proliferation was observed for the gelatin microspheres with lower water content. When cultured with the gelatin hydrogel microspheres, MSC formed their aggregates, in contrast to culturing with hydrogel sheets. The cell viability was significantly high compared with that of the hydrogel sheet. The production of sulfated glycosaminaglycan (sGAG) from MSC was examined as a measure of chondrogenic differentiation, after their culturing in a normal and chondrogenic differentiation media. For both the cultures, the amount of sGAG produced was significantly higher for MSC cultured with the gelatin microspheres than that of the gelatin sheet. Stronger differentiation of MSC was achieved in culture with the microspheres incorporating TGF-beta1 than that of MSC cultured in the medium containing the same amount of TGF-beta1," wrote T. Ogawa and colleagues, Kyoto University, Institute for Frontier Medical Science.

The researchers concluded: "It is concluded that the gelatin hydrogel microspheres function well as both the scaffold of MSC and the matrix of TGF-beta1 Tiffany Cushion Drop earrings, resulting in enhanced MSC aggregation and the consequent promotion of cell proliferation and differentiation."

Ogawa and colleagues published the results of their research in the Journal of Biomaterials Science Polymer Edition (In vitro proliferation and chondrogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow stem cells cultured with gelatin hydrogel microspheres for TGF-beta1 release. Journal of Biomaterials Science Polymer Edition, 2010;21(5):609-21).

BRIC and Mortar

Sylvia Ann Hewlett and Ripa Rashid from the Center for Work-Life Policy in New York studied the challenges of working women in BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) and the UAE and wrote an article, The Battle for Female Talent in Emerging Markets that will appear in the Harvard Business Review this month. Hewlett, a professor at Columbia University shares her views.

Q Why did you choose BRIC and UAE for your study?

A Here women are highly ambitious as opposed to their counterparts in developed nations. Their drive to go the extra mile is Tiffany 1837 Lock bracelet.

Q What were the most pressing issues for these women?

A The greatest concern was safety while commuting to their work place. Apart from these there were cultural pressures and discrimination in offices that contained their growth.

Q Which is better, being gender-neutral or gender-sensitive?

A The word that makes it happen is 'proactive.' Companies like Pfizer and Wipro in India have taken the extra step and gone out there to help women come out and become achievers. Women still have a long way to go. And being proactive is the only way this talent pool can be preserved and also nurtured. More companies should follow suit and encourage women.

As busy as a bee can be

Bees are just getting busier these days. Research shows that honey bees have a very strong nose that helps them smell a lot more than just sweet nectar. A company in Britain has made use of this sense and managed to train bees for detecting bombs and drugs. Soon they will be put to work at the airport as well. They seem to have conveniently forgotten that bombs may cease to be a hazard to us anymore but the bees will definitely be. Watch out for this sting operation.

Everybody knows King Tut, but assembling sponsor team to cover huge overhead a challenge

HE WAS A STAR 3,300 years ago, but it took U.S. marketing knowhow to transform him into a boxoffice headliner. Ancient Egypt's King Tut is the spotlight of "Tutankhamun & the Golden Age of the Pharaohs," a four-city traveling exhibition comprising more than 130 treasures from the tombs of the celebrated boy king and Valley of the Kings monarchs, which has been breaking box-office records since its U.S. run began at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in June 2005.

Over four months, 937,000 Tiffany Nature Dragonfly pendant turned out at LACMA, second only to Tut's first U.S. tour in the 1970s. Next stop, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., attracted more than 600,000 (four times larger than any previous show at the Museum of Art there), and that's despite the whopping (and controversial) $30 ticket prices. It opens in Chicago next weekend.

Bryan Harris, 31, W-marketing at Arts & Exhibitions International, oversees the national public relations, advertising and promotional campaign. Golin Harris is handling PR for the exhibition, while advertising varies depending on the host city. Public fascination with Tut makes the show an easy sell, he says, but bottom-line business success is not assured due to enormous overhead. The exhibition has a deal with the Egyptian government that takes the first $40 million in revenue, once the tour reaches certain ticket sales targets. In Los Angeles, the energetic Mr. Harris did his part: The exhibition staged a Hollywood-style red carpet premiere night. Mr. Harris signed up promotional partners, such as American Express Co., and those not typically associated with museum marketing-Ralphs, a California grocery chain owned by Kroger Co., offered discounts on admission Tiffany Notes band ring to Ralphs card holders. There was also an Egyptian trip giveaway (by way of the regional Coca-Cola Co. borders), which was promoted in Ralphs. see's Candies was among the other local sponsors. "King Tut Returns," sports fans learned about the show on the Jumbotron at Los Angeles' Staples Center.

Mr. Harris' marketing efforts also tapped the power of the Internet with e-mail blasts to culture mavens and a "Win a Trip to L.A." sweepstakes on AOL. National tour partner National Geographic did a documentary on its cable channel, in addition to running a magazine cover story on Tut, as well as running ads for the exhibit.

Mr. Harris says he and his colleagues have tried to make Tiffany Notes Pendant the promotional elements don't turn tacky-a button pusher in the genteel museum world. "There's a philosophical boundary you must not cross or it can quickly diminish the value of the project," he says.
