Sylvia Ann Hewlett and Ripa Rashid from the Center for Work-Life Policy in New York studied the challenges of working women in BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) and the UAE and wrote an article, The Battle for Female Talent in Emerging Markets that will appear in the Harvard Business Review this month. Hewlett, a professor at Columbia University shares her views.
Q Why did you choose BRIC and UAE for your study?

Q What were the most pressing issues for these women?
A The greatest concern was safety while commuting to their work place. Apart from these there were cultural pressures and discrimination in offices that contained their growth.
Q Which is better, being gender-neutral or gender-sensitive?
A The word that makes it happen is 'proactive.' Companies like Pfizer and Wipro in India have taken the extra step and gone out there to help women come out and become achievers. Women still have a long way to go. And being proactive is the only way this talent pool can be preserved and also nurtured. More companies should follow suit and encourage women.
